New Mobile Battery Rules for Japanese Airlines

Last Updated : 07/02/2025

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) has announced the implementation of new operational standards regarding the handling of mobile batteries on aircraft, effective July 8, 2025. This initiative aims to further strengthen cabin safety in response to a number of incidents involving smoke and fires caused by mobile batteries, both in Japan and internationally.

Under the revised standards, mobile batteries may no longer be stored in overhead compartments above passenger seats, and charging is only permitted in locations where the battery can be continuously monitored. These measures address the fire and overheating risks associated with lithium-ion batteries, which can be triggered by impacts or overcharging. Prompt detection and appropriate response are essential to ensure passenger safety.

These new regulations will apply to all flights operated by Japanese scheduled air carriers. Passengers traveling on foreign carriers are advised to follow the specific safety protocols and instructions provided by each respective airline.
