In a significant update for international travelers, the previously postponed European “EES (Entry/Exit System)” began its phased rollout on October 12, 2025.
EES is an automated border control system for non-EU nationals (including travelers from Japan) visiting the Schengen Area and other participating countries for a short stay (up to 90 days within any 180-day period).

EES is often confused with ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). They are two separate systems.
The launch of ETIAS is separate from EES and is scheduled for the latter half of 2026.
New information will be updated as it becomes available.
