[2025 Update] Europe’s “EES (Entry/Exit System)” Implementation Update

Last Updated : 10/30/2025

In a significant update for international travelers, the previously postponed European “EES (Entry/Exit System)” began its phased rollout on October 12, 2025.

Current EES Implementation Status

  1. Phased Rollout Initiated
    • As of October 12, 2025, the EES has begun a “phased” rollout across 29 European countries, including the Schengen Area.
    • This means the system is not being activated at all airports and borders simultaneously, but will be gradually introduced over a 6-month transition period.
  2. Full Operation Scheduled
    • The system is scheduled to be fully operational at all border checkpoints by April 10, 2026.
    • During the current transition period, some borders may not yet be using EES for registration, and the traditional passport stamping may still occur.

What is EES? (A Recap)

EES is an automated border control system for non-EU nationals (including travelers from Japan) visiting the Schengen Area and other participating countries for a short stay (up to 90 days within any 180-day period).

  • Purpose: To replace manual passport stamping and create a digital, automated record of entries and exits.
  • Who it affects: Non-EU nationals traveling for short stays (visa-exempt).

What Do Travelers Need to Do?

  • On Your First Visit: When arriving at an airport or border where EES is active, you will need to register your biometric data (a facial image and fingerprints) at a dedicated kiosk or counter.
  • On Subsequent Visits: Once registered, your data is valid for 3 years. Future border crossings are expected to be smoother.

Important: The Difference from ETIAS

EES is often confused with ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). They are two separate systems.

  • EES (Rolling out now): This is an “entry/exit recording system” that registers your biometric data at the border.
  • ETIAS (Planned for the future): This is a “pre-travel authorization system,” similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canadian eTA. It will require travelers to apply online and receive authorization before traveling.

The launch of ETIAS is separate from EES and is scheduled for the latter half of 2026.

New information will be updated as it becomes available.
