2026 UK & Europe Travel Guide: Mandatory ETA & New Rules

Last Updated : 02/04/2026

As we enter 2026, travel requirements for the UK and Europe are undergoing significant changes. Most notably, the UK will implement a strict “No ETA, No Travel” policy starting February 25. Here is everything you need to know to ensure a smooth journey.

UK ETA: Mandatory Enforcement Starts Feb 25

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) transition period officially ends on February 25, 2026.

  • Strict “No ETA, No Travel”: From this date, carriers will deny boarding to any passenger without a valid ETA.
  • Get Approved Before You Fly: A “pending” application is not enough. You must have final approval before arriving at the airport.
  • Future Fee Increase: The Home Office intends to raise the fee from £16 to £20. Apply early to secure your 2-year permit at the current rate.

Europe (EU): New Digital Border Systems

The European Union is also modernizing its borders with two key systems:

  • EES (Entry/Exit System): Launching April 10 Replacing manual passport stamps with biometric registration (facial/fingerprint), the EES will be fully operational by April 10. While the first registration may take a moment, subsequent entries will be much faster.
  • ETIAS: Expected Late 2026 The pre-travel authorization system for the EU (ETIAS) is slated for a late 2026 launch (Q4). No action is currently required for spring or summer travel.
