Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) announced that the number of international arrivals in Japan in May 2025 was up 21.5% year on year to record-high 3,693,300 for May. Compared to May 2023, when COVID-19 was defined as the regular flu, the result was up 94.5%.
JNTO said that the growth was boosted by national holidays and school holidays in part of major source markets, although May is usually a lower-demand month in between the cherry blossom season and the summer holiday season.
Visitors from India were up 47.9% to record-high 43,000 on a single month basis, and visitors from 21 source markets were record-high for May.
