Starting March 24, 2025, a new passport format will be implemented to boost anti-counterfeiting efforts. All passports will be produced domestically in Japan from this date.
Due to increased processing times, passport applications now take approximately 3–4 weeks. Please verify your passport’s validity and apply for renewal early if needed. Renewals are accepted when less than one year remains.
As of March 27, 2025, all prefectures in Japan are expected to offer online services for both new passport applications and renewals.
