The Launch of European Entry/Exit System (EES) has been postponed

Last Updated : 11/25/2024

EES(Entry / Exit System)

The European Entrance System (EES) is an automated information technology system designed for non-EU nationals on short visits (up to 90 days) to register upon entering and exiting Schengen countries. This automated registration system will supersede the existing manual passport stamping procedure, enhancing efficiency and data accuracy for border crossings.

The launch was originally set for November 10, 2024, but has been delayed because France, Germany, and the Netherlands are not yet prepared.

Furthermore, the EES is an automated registration system implemented at borders, including airports, eliminating the need for prior application.

How EES change the travel?

Biometric data

When entering and exiting an EES country, travelers are required to provide biometric data. This includes presenting a passport, having fingerprints scanned, and capturing a facial image at border controls. The procedure is designed to be efficient; however, travelers should anticipate possible delays, particularly during the initial phases of implementation.

Automated border control

This system is designed to enhance efficiency and decrease wait times; however, travelers should be mindful that lines may be longer at first as both travelers and border control personnel adjust to the new protocols.

Improved data security

EES improves the security of the border control process by ensuring that all entries and exits are precisely documented, aiding in the resolution of issues like visa overstays and enhancing overall border management.

Impact on Overstays

EES automatically calculates the duration of stay for travelers, making it crucial for them to comply with their visa conditions. Even minor overstays will be promptly identified in the system and could lead to fines, entry bans, and other penalties.

Preparing for the transition

The start date for implementation has not yet been determined, but travelers will need to allow extra time at border controls to comply with the new procedures, especially during the first few months after EES implementation, when traveling to or from Europe.

New information will be updated as it becomes available.
