Testing a Prototype Self-service Screening System

Last Updated : 03/08/2024

This week, the Department of Homeland Security(DHS) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials unveiled the future of U.S. airport security, introducing automated inspection lanes at Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International Airport.

TSA and DHS S&T to prototype self-service screening system at Harry Reid International Airport

The system works by sending passengers to a single checkpoint lane with four integrated stations. Each station includes a video monitor that instructs passengers what to do and when. Passengers are instructed on how to stand for inspection, how to handle their baggage, and how to exit afterward, without the involvement of actual TSA personnel, unless additional inspection is required.

Initially, only passengers registered for TSA’s PreCheck will be eligible.

But with increased adoption, there is a potential for significant changes in the airport experience.
