New Japanese passports now take more time to process

Starting from March 24, 2025

Starting March 24, 2025, a new passport format will be implemented to boost anti-counterfeiting efforts. All passports will be produced domestically in Japan from this date.

3–4 weeks from application to issuance

Due to increased processing times, passport applications now take approximately 3–4 weeks. Please verify your passport’s validity and apply for renewal early if needed. Renewals are accepted when less than one year remains.
