Several media outlets reported that on April 23, 2025, the Japanese government announced its policy to introduce an electronic travel authorization system, dubbed “Japan’s ESTA,” by fiscal year 2028, as a measure to address the rapidly increasing number of foreign visitors to Japan.
This new system is modeled after the U.S. “ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization)” and will reportedly apply to foreign nationals from countries and regions that are currently exempt from short-term visa requirements.
