Romania and Bulgaria will fully join the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025, after partial membership since March 2024. As such, The Schengen Area will comprise 27 European Union countries and 4 non-EU countries.

It began in 1985 with five countries and now includes 27 EU countries and 4 non-EU nations (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland).
