Romania and Bulgaria will fully join the Schengen Area on January 1, 2025, after partial membership since March 2024. As such, The Schengen Area will comprise 27 European Union countries and 4 non-EU countries.

*The Schengen Agreement allows for passport-free travel between participating European countries, creating the world’s largest free travel area. It began in 1985 with five countries and now includes 27 EU countries and 4 non-EU nations (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland). It simplifies border crossings, boosting tourism, trade, and mobility.
