Understanding Travel Protection: Overview & Key Considerations

Last Updated : 09/17/2026

Whether embarking on an international business trip or taking a personal vacation, travel disruptions—such as severe weather delays, sudden illness, or misplaced luggage—can arise without warning.

When unforeseen events happen, non-refundable travel investments and emergency medical costs can become significant out-of-pocket expenses. Below is an informational overview of standard travel protection options available through Allianz Global Assistance, along with important policy conditions to review prior to purchasing.

Coverage benefits, terms, and rates vary by state of residence, trip cost, and traveler age. Review real-time pricing and plan terms directly on the official Allianz portal.

What Travel Protection Covers

Under the terms and qualifying conditions established in the applicable certificate of insurance, standard travel protection plans provide benefits across two key stages:

Pre-Departure Icon

Pre-Departure: Trip Cancellation Protection

Reimbursement for Prepaid, Non-Refundable Expenses

If you are prevented from taking your trip due to a specifically covered reason (such as covered illness, injury, or qualifying severe weather), your prepaid, non-refundable expenses are eligible for reimbursement up to your policy limit.

Post-Departure Icon

Post-Departure: En Route & In-Destination Disruptions

Delays, Baggage, & Emergency Medical Assistance

Provides coverage for qualifying travel delays (hotel and meal expenses during extended delays), baggage loss or delay (essential purchases), and emergency medical or dental expenses incurred while traveling, supported by 24/7 assistance services.

Standard Plan Options Available via Allianz

Allianz Global Assistance offers standard plan tiers to fit different travel styles and trip values:

  • Classic Plan:

The standard, comprehensive package covering qualifying trip cancellations, trip interruptions, travel delays, baggage, and medical emergencies for specifically covered reasons.

  • Premier Plan:

Designed for high-value or long-distance travel, offering higher maximum benefit caps for covered cancellations and emergency medical care.

(Note: Plan features listed above are general summaries. Exact limits and covered reasons are determined exclusively by the applicable certificate of insurance.)

Important Conditions & Policy Disclosures to Review

Before purchasing any travel protection plan, please carefully review the following regulatory conditions on the Allianz portal:

1. State-Specific Terms & Plan Details (Critical)

Insurance regulations in the United States require benefits, exclusions, pricing, and plan availability to be filed on a state-by-state basis. Your state of legal residence determines the exact policy language and coverage available to you. Open the plan page below, click “→ Plan and pricing details” in the menu, and select your state from the dropdown to review your official coverage limits and certificate of insurance:

2. Covered Reasons Requirement

Standard plans provide reimbursement only when canceling for specifically enumerated perils (e.g., qualifying illness or severe carrier disruptions). Personal schedule changes, general changes of mind, or business calendar conflicts are not covered reasons under standard policies.

3. Pre-Existing Medical Condition Limitations

Pre-existing conditions are excluded from coverage unless you meet all requirements for a Pre-Existing Medical Condition Exclusion Waiver (typically requiring purchase within 14 days of your initial trip deposit and insuring 100% of all non-refundable trip expenses).

4. 15-Day Policy Review Period (Full Refund / Free Look)

To ensure your plan fits your needs, a 15-day review period is provided. You may cancel your policy for any reason and receive a 100% full refund of the plan premium, provided that all of the following conditions are met:

  • Timeframe: The cancellation request is submitted within 15 days of purchase (counting the date of purchase as Day 1, expiring on Day 15 / purchase date + 14 days);
  • Pre-Departure: You have not yet departed on your scheduled trip; and
  • No Claims: You have not initiated or filed a claim under the policy.
(Note: The review period duration and terms may vary depending on the insurance laws of your state of residence.)
